Dallas Cowboys Chief Operating Officer Stephen Jones remains untroubled despite quarterback Dak Prescott entering training camp in the last year of his contract.
“We aim to secure Dak,” Jones mentioned in a recent interview on The Athletic’s “Scoop City” podcast, as reported by Dianna Russini and Larry Holder. Jerry Jones, the general manager of the Cowboys, and I are having this conversation with Dak, his agent, plus Dak himself. He understands we intend to keep him here, though he also recognizes the challenges.”
Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are in the final year of their contracts, while star pass-rusher Micah Parsons, contracted through 2025, might seek a major deal next offseason.
As the team’s quarterback, Prescott’s future is a frequent topic in the media. His current contract restricts Dallas from trading him without his approval or using the franchise tag to keep him beyond the next season. Prescott’s camp is rumored to seek an extension worth $60 million annually.
“When you have high-priced quarterbacks, maintaining the entire team becomes challenging,” Stephen Jones explained. “At some point, difficult decisions are necessary. Yet, we are optimistic about managing it.”
Prescott was a close runner-up for MVP after the 2023 season, ranking second in the NFL with a 72.7 adjusted QBR, a 105.9 passer rating, and leading with 36 touchdown passes. However, some speculate Jerry Jones’s hesitance is due to Prescott’s 2-5 career playoff record.

Additionally, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his contract, amid rumors of former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick possibly joining Dallas. It’s uncertain how Belichick would react if Prescott became a free agent in March 2025, but the team could consider trading for an established quarterback to replace the 30-year-old.
