With the start of training camp today, the Houston Texans announced a number of roster changes. Among the 10 transactions, the most notable involves LaDarius Henderson, their seventh-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan.
Selected at No. 249 overall in late April, Henderson was waived today with a non-football injury designation, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2. This makes him the first draft pick to be cut this year, and he will likely be placed on the injured reserve list, giving him time to recover while remaining under team control.
Henderson, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 309 pounds, played tackle for the Michigan Wolverines under Jim Harbaugh in 2023. Despite his college success, he received a 55.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, including a 44.7 grade in pass blocking and a 58.0 in run blocking. These grades ranked him 497th nationally at his position, which may have influenced the Texans’ decision to waive him.
Projected to play guard for Houston due to his size, Henderson’s potential replacement might already be on the team. The Texans signed former Colts guard Chris Reed today, one of three new additions. Reed brings valuable experience and versatility to the team, potentially filling the gap left by Henderson’s absence.
Another option for filling Henderson’s spot could be a different veteran. Free agency offensive tackle Cameron Erving was also checked out by the organization today. Choosing Erving in the first round of the 2015 draft, Cleveland selected the 6-foot-5, 315-pound forward. He has primarily played left tackle but also has experience at left guard and center. Over his career, Erving has appeared in 98 NFL games, starting 58. If signed, he would provide depth at multiple positions on the offensive line, offering the Texans flexibility and experience as they head into the season.
